Americans Joe Roberts and Cameron Beaubier finished in the top 20 of today’s Grand Prix of Austria at the Red Bull Ring after an eventful race for the pair.
American Racing’s Beaubier and Italtrans Racing’s Roberts were both involved in a first-turn melee with Beaubier charging into turn one after a good start but making contact with Roberts and others in the right-hander. That put both Americans on their back foot in 26th and 27th, respectively, at the end of lap one and more bad news would come quickly for Beaubier as he was deemed to be at fault and was hit with a double long-lap penalty.
Roberts put his head down and got to 16th with Beaubier at the very back after serving his penalty. From there the five-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion charged through to ultimately finish 20th.
The race ws won by Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Raul Fernandez by .845 of a second over Idemitsu Honda Team Asia’s Ai Ogura. Elf Marc VDS Racing’s Augusto Fernandez rounded out the podium.
World Championship points leader Remy Gardner, meanwhile, ended up seventh on his Red Bull KTM Ajo Kalex.
