Round five of the Italian Supersport Championship, being held this weekend at Mugello Circuit, kicked off with unusually high temperatures, forcing the riders, including Barni Spark Racing Team’s Supersport wildcard rider Kayla Yaakov, to search for different setup solutions than might be expected.
Both the free practice and Q1 sessions were interrupted by red flags, making it difficult to find rhythm and a clear lap without slower riders on track. Despite the challenges, it was a positive debut for Yaakov, the 17-year-old MotoAmerica Supersport rider and Rahal Ducati Moto team member from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Yaakov improved her lap time in each session, finishing Q1 with a time of 1:57.674, which places her 38th. Tomorrow, all riders will have the opportunity to improve in Q2 ahead of the afternoon races.
“Today was the first real race day after Thursday’s tests, and I have to say I’m a bit disappointed with my position,” Yaakov said. “I expected more. I still have a lot to learn about the bike, which is very different from the one I ride in MotoAmerica. In Q2, I hope to set a time with the new tire, which I didn’t do today. Making the most of the Dunlops would already give me a big step up in the standings. Compared to yesterday, I’ve already significantly lowered my times, even though the track was slower. This makes me confident for tomorrow.”
Barni Spark Racing Team owner Marco Barnabò added, “In Supersport, it’s crucial to find the right position to get a lap without traffic. We are very satisfied with Kayla. She impressed me with her professionalism and determination, and she is really working well with the technicians. She has lowered her times since yesterday, so I’m very satisfied!”
