Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes lowered his best lap time in each of Friday’s three practice sessions at Donington Park, site of round six of the FIM Superbike World Championship, to end the day quickest.

Second to MV Agusta’s Leon Camier in the first session, and first in the remaining two practices, Sykes put in a total of 65 laps around the 12-turn, 2.49-mile British circuit. He closed out the afternoon with a 1:28.172, less than a tenth of a second off his own 2013 race lap record and just 0.111 ahead of Ducati’s Davide Giugliano. In fact, the top 13 riders were covered by less than one second.

In World Supersport, Jules Cluzel posted the best lap of the day, a 1:30.735. After two sessions, American PJ Jacobsen, currently second overall in points, was fifth-quickest. British riders filled seven of the top 11 places.

Tom Sykes Donington Friday

Tom Sykes: “It was only a couple one-off laps, and we still have work to do. It’s a strange format; I’m not a big fan of three sessions on the Friday.”

Davide Giugliano Donington Friday

Davide Giugliano: “I’m losing a lot in the slow sections, meaning I have to then make that back up through the fast parts. We also still need a little more rear grip, but we will work on that again tomorrow.”

Jonathan Rea Friday Donington

Jonathan Rea: “It was busy, and I didn’t have a good feeling today. We’re still looking for a little bit extra with the bike, but we were able to do a long run in the last session.”

Leon Haslam Friday Donington

Leon Haslam: “In FP3, we got very close, but I think there is still a lot of room for improvement, and I can’t help but to be confident.”

Chaz Davies Friday Donington

Chaz Davies: “In certain sections, we’re still wheelying too much and having to play with the electronics to solve that. We could also use a little more acceleration out of the slow corners.”

Michael van der Mark Donington Friday

Michael van der Mark: “For the final session, we made a big change to the CBR, and I got a good feeling. At the end, we put in a new tire to go directly to Superpole 2.”

Alex Lowes Donington Friday

Alex Lowes: “It’s really, really nice to be riding at Donington, I’m enjoying it a lot and I feel like I’m riding pretty well.”

Jordi Torres Friday Donington

Jordi Torres: “It’s difficult to do three sessions on the same day on a new circuit. There isn’t enough time to gather your thoughts and memorize it.”

Sylvain Guintoli Donington Friday

Sylvain Guintoli: “The feeling with the bike is really quite different with the changes that the team has made, but we’re staying with it and working hard on setting up the bike around these changes.”
