Two things about MotoAmerica rider representative Michael Martin. A) He’s a good guy who sometimes has to be the bad guy; and B) He’s one hell of a motorcycle rider with a road-racing resume filled with wins and championships. So, if you’re a young MotoAmerica racer and you wonder who this “old guy” who is reprimanding you for your wrongdoing, dig around a bit online and you might be surprised. Also, remember one more thing, he’s a racer through and through so he knows what it’s like to be in your position. Even when you’re getting reprimanded.
What was your introduction to the motorcycle world?
I was fortunate to have two gearhead older brothers, so I grew up in a world of go-karts, bicycles and motorcycles. They had me riding motorcycles as soon as I learned to pedal a bicycle. Racing motocross came soon after. I’ve competed in just about all types of motorcycle competitions except for speedway and I want to try it before I get too old.
What led to you working in the MotoAmerica paddock?
I came to a MotoAmerica event at Barber and was talking to Thomas Stevens. He was the race director at the time, and I mentioned to him if there was anything I could do to help to give me a call. That was five years ago and I’m still happy to be involved.
What part of the job do you enjoy the most?
I love racing and everything that comes with it. I’m comfortable at tracks and feel at home. I also really enjoy the people I work with. Even Paul Carruthers.
What part of the job is the most difficult?
Trying to explain to upset riders that we must follow the rulebook. I get it, I’m a racer but sometimes it gets a bit out of hand. And I don’t enjoy writing sanctions for speeding on pit lane even though the fines go to the Roadracing World Action Fund.
What do you like to do when you’re not at the racetrack? I am currently working on getting my pilot’s license so flying is my latest gig, but I enjoy motocrossing, mountain biking, waterskiing and spending time with my fiancée Melisa and kids, John Michael and Molly.
