Mathew Scholtz had a breakout year in 2017 on the Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha. The South African, in his first full season with the team, not only put the Westby Yamaha R1 on the podium twice in the Motul Superbike class, he also won a Superbike race. That made him the first Superstock 1000 rider to do so in the MotoAmerica Series and the result came in the very last race of the season in the wet at Barber Motorsports Park.
In addition to finishing fifth in the MotoAmerica Motul Superbike Championship, Scholtz also emerged as the 2017 Bazzaz Superstock 1000 Champion.
When he wasn’t on the Superbike podium, Scholtz was close to it. In total, he finished fourth four times and those fourths were victories in the Superstock ranks. In all, he won 10 Superstock races and ended the season 101 points clear of second-placed Jake Lewis.
